After a Miami housing project was condemned, and a promised low-income housing development fell through, the displaced residents decided to take action. For six months, 50 homeless people took over a parcel of land in the Liberty City portion of Miami in a fight against the city and developers. Using cardboard boxes and wood pallets, the activists built Umoja Village. Here, Fort Lauderdale photographer Bryan Bogater documents the Take Back The Land movement.

After celebrating six months of occupation, on April 26, 2007, the Liberty City shantytown known as Umoja Village burned to the ground. Shantytown organizers vow to rebuild. For more details, click here.
